Several months ago, the Phoenix Union High School District's governing board tasked a committee with drafting a new school safety plan.

The committee has finally presented a plan, but it’s still unclear whether or not school resource officers will return to campuses.

The district did away with school resource officers in 2020. But it’s been reconsidering the role of law enforcement on campus.

The student safety committee has recommended bringing officers back, but with certain stipulations.

During a meeting of the governing board last week, members did not vote on that plan, deciding instead to hold even more study sessions to consider the recommendations and develop a policy. Board member Stephanie Parra opposed that idea.

“The work has been completed, the recommendations have been made by the committee," Parra said. "We have heard from a large number of community stakeholders, so I just — This to me, seems like we’re kicking the can down the road and I don’t support it.”

The board is scheduled to meet again on May 4.
