Roughly 2.5 million Arizonans rely on AHCCCS, Arizona’s Medicaid program, for their health insurance. On April 1, the agency began its redetermination process to make sure everyone still qualifies for the program.

During the pandemic, AHCCCS suspended its redetermination process. So even if a person no longer qualified, they were able to maintain their coverage.

Earlier this year, the agency warned that thousands of Arizonans were at risk being disenrolled.

Heidi Capriotti of AHCCCS says 230,000 renewals have been processed so far and, "We know now that 33,000 individuals who had maintained eligibility during the public health emergency have been discontinued. 42,000 have continued or able to stay on the Medicaid program," she said.

AHCCCS is huge; it’s the largest insurer in Arizona and covers more than 50% of the births in the state.
