Judge blocks Phoenix Suns and Mercury TV deal with Gray Television

A federal judge has blocked the Phoenix Suns from moving forward with a new television and streaming rights deal.

The judge agrees with Bally Sports’ parent company that the deal violated bankruptcy law.

Last month, the Phoenix Suns announced an agreement with Gray Television to air next season’s games, in addition to a streaming option.

But on Wednesday, the judge presiding over Diamond Sports Group’s bankruptcy case declared the agreement void.

Bally’s parent company filed for bankruptcy protection in March and argued that the team made the announcement before its contract with the Suns had expired.

Bally was done airing Suns games at the end of the regular season, but the company claimed its contract was valid until the conclusion of the NBA season and that it has a right to try to match any offers.

Phoenix Suns and Mercury CEO Josh Bartelstein said “The Phoenix Suns and Mercury are excited to continue giving our fans everything they want for the best possible experience and making our games accessible to everyone. We are committed to working collaboratively on a fair resolution that will be in the best interest of our fans, our community, and our players.”
