The Hopi Tribe is receiving $48 million for water infrastructure repairs and improvements.

The funding will be used to make repairs to the tribe’s sanitation systems, upgrade irrigation complexes and invest in dams to protect Hopi communities.

More than $6 million is going toward expanding access to clean water in the Navajo County town of Keams Canyon. Water lines there will be connected to the tribe’s mitigation project, which replaces water contaminated with arsenic.

Interior Secretary Deb Haaland made the announcement while touring tribal lands in northern Arizona this past week. The department noted she hiked to Supai Village inside the Grand Canyon to visit with the Havasupai, marking the first time an Interior secretary has visited the tribe.
