A new $4.5 million federal grant will fund Arizona State University research to explore the link between aerobic exercise and slowing the progression of Alzheimer's disease.

The grant comes from the National Institute of Aging and will support the study’s personnel and participant expenses.

Fang Yu, the Edson Chair in Dementia Translational Nursing Science at ASU, leads the research.

“So, at this point, the evidence is quite strong that for people who are physically active, their risk for Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias are reduced," she said.

More than 100 participants of ages 65 and older who may have changes in their memory are being sought for study.

The Alzheimer’s Association estimates 6.7 million Americans age 65 and older are living with the disease.
