Arizona COVID-19 deaths, hospital admissions at lowest point since reporting began
COVID-19 risk remains very low nationwide. And by some measures, Arizona is now seeing some of the lowest levels of virus spread since the pandemic began more than three years ago.
Some Arizonans are still being hospitalized and dying from COVID-19 each week. But the 16 COVID deaths in the state this week make up the lowest weekly death count Arizona has reported since the start of the pandemic, according to CDC records. COVID-19 hospital admissions have also dropped to the lowest point since reporting began.
Dr. Frank Lovecchio with Valleywise Health said his hospital had no COVID-19 patients in the intensive-care unit as of Tuesday.
“This has been some of the best of times that we’ve had in the last three years with regard to COVID and COVID admissions," Lovecchio said. “I think this is promising and I think this is what we hoped for. This is typically what happens when people have new viruses that are out, a lot of people get it and then after a year or two it establishes its pattern.”
Lovecchio said the current strain of COVID-19 spreading in Arizona is still highly contagious, but he suspects most Arizonans have developed some immunity through vaccines or prior infection.
