The results are in for Arizona’s Instrument to Measure Standards, or AIMS test, and state education officials say there were gains in all subject areas. From Phoenix, KJZZ’s Mark Brodie has more.

MARK BRODIE: The state education department says 60 percent of Arizona students passed the science section - a six percent increase over last year. And, more than three-quarters of students passed the reading section - that’s four percent better than 2011. Math and writing scores showed the smallest improvement - each up one percent from last year, to 60 percent in math and 57 percent in writing. AIMS tests are required for students in third through eighth grade, and then again in tenth grade. The state education department Thursday also released its letter grades for schools. Those are based on criteria including AIMS scores and year-over-year academic growth. Close to 60 percent of Arizona schools got either A’s, or B’s. The rest received either C’s or D’s, or were not rated.
