State officials take off from Capitol in Blackhawk helicopter

August 16, 2012

Government and military representatives teamed up for a training exercise at the state Capitol this morning.

Officials from the executive, legislative, and judicial branches were flown away in a Blackhawk helicopter that landed on the lawn of the memorial plaza across from the Capitol.

“They’re going [to] the Western Aviation Training Site down in Marana, where they’re going to evaluate the facilities there to see what’s available in terms of ensuring continuity of emergency response,” Sergeant Lauren DeVita of the state Department of Emergency and Military Affairs said.

DeVita said this is a useful simulation, because in the event of an emergency, government leaders would likely be evacuated using helicopters.
