Votes in favor of the Deer Valley Unified School District’s $24.75 million override have surpassed votes opposed to it, according to data from the Maricopa County Recorder.

Deer Valley’s override looked like it might have been on the road to defeat Wednesday when it was losing by 414 votes. But that changed Thursday when updated vote tallies from the Recorder showed the override ahead by 197 votes.

Deer Valley faces $16.5 million in cuts over several years if the override fails.

A spokeswoman repeated Thursday the district will not comment on the election until after final results are announced.

The Recorder’s office said Wednesday it hopes to finish processing ballots Friday.

The Deer Valley governing board has not said what services may be cut if the override fails, the district spokeswoman said.

If it passed, money would help do things like maintain class sizes, recruit and keep teachers, give dedicated funding for full-day kindergarten and transportation, support fine arts programs, physical education, gifted services, language immersion and international baccalaureate.

Deer Valley serves about 35,000 K-12 students and stretches from the northern Maricopa County line south to Bell Road.
