Ray Malnar is expected to be sworn in tonight as a Glendale councilman after defeating sitting Councilman Gary Sherwood in a recall election last week.

Malnar will take office having won about 53 percent of votes cast by Sahuaro District residents. The owner of a tile and wood restoration business, Malnar hasn’t announced an agenda. His goal is for constituents to feel like they have a voice.

“It doesn’t matter whether you agree with me or don’t agree with me,” Malnar said. “As your representative, I have an obligation to hear you out. And to ask you to tell me how you feel about issues and why.”

Glendale Mayor Jerry Weiers said he supported Malnar because of his unquestionable morals and ethics.

“Ray is a team player,” Weiers said. “He is not a ‘yes man’ for anybody.”

Malnar takes over Sherwood’s term that is set to expire next year. Malnar said he’s already filed paperwork and is gathering signatures to run for Glendale City Council again in 2016.

Judge Elizabeth Finn will administer the oath of office during the regular council meeting at city hall, according to a Glendale spokeswoman.
