GoDaddy.com outage can have 'mushroom' effect on businesses
Scottsdale-based internet company GoDaddy.com suffered a widespread outage Monday, causing the millions of websites of their customers to go dark. Most are small businesses, and the outage could have an exponential effect. Marilyn Prosch of ASU's W. P. Carey School of Business explains:
MARILYN PROSCH: In many cases they're just shut down. And that means also if their customer service lines -- their customers, Go Daddy's customers, -- customer service lines are online as well, their own customers can't get to their customer service lines. So it just kind of mushrooms.
Prosch emphasized this does not appear to be a data breach, so customer information should be safe. But with many businesses using GoDaddy email service as well,
PROSCH: So they're crippled, they can't communicate with these customers, they can't post something on the website. Twitter has turned out to be a great tool in this.
A GoDaddy spokesperson told the Associated Press the company was working to restore service.
