It’s not yet a done deal. A Tempe councilman’s plan to create a safe spot for people to handle Internet exchanges will require more research.

After hearing Councilman Kolby Granville’s pitch yesterday to designate a well-lit location with video surveillance, the Tempe City Council asked the city attorney to look into potential liability.

For example, if Tempe promotes a safe location for people to buy and sell items they posted on Craigslist and other sites, would the city be vouching that it’s good quality and not stolen? Would the city have to keep a log of sales?

Recently, Arizona State University Police set up space in its Tempe lobby for students and university employees to complete online sales during weekday business hours.  The "Online Exchange Zone" is located at 325 E. Apache Boulevard in Tempe. 

Officers do not supervise sales, but sellers and buyers are required to provide an ASU ID number and other information in a log that is kept at the front desk.
