Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport’s busiest terminal is saying goodbye to carpet and hello to a product created in Italy.

During a city meeting last week, Deputy Aviation Director Jay DeWitt said they will spend $3 million to install terrazzo floors in Terminal 4.

Terrazzo gets its name from where it originated — Terrazo, Italy. It is a composite material, made up of marble, quartz, glass and granite.

"It's very, very easy to maintain and it lasts forever," he said.

DeWitt said the airport spends about $1 million a year to replace worn carpet. Terrazzo floors are already used in Terminals 2 and 3.

DeWitt also told aviation subcommittee members that the airport is spending about $20 million on escalators in Terminal 4's international facility to get people off planes, through customs and on to their destinations faster.
