Tax Day is approaching, and Arizona nonprofits are helping people donate before the day comes.

More than 950 local nonprofits supporting different causes from education and health to arts took part in Arizona Gives Day, a one-day online giving event. Kristen Merrifield, CEO of Alliance of Arizona Nonprofits, said the association started this as a way to generate donations and introduce new donors to the more than 21,000 nonprofits in Arizona.

"We specifically put our Arizona Gives Day in April to help spread out, to make more opportunities for giving through the year," she said.

With the economy stabilizing after the recession, states are investing locally and seeing nonprofits as more of a necessity.

“Nonprofits not only saw a decrease in philanthropy, they also saw an increase in need because now they’re serving these people that have maybe lost their job or have had a decrease in income," Merrifield said.

Arizona has more nonprofits per capita than any other state in the country, Merrifield said. According to the Nonprofit Economic Impact Report, Arizona nonprofits brought in approximately $28 billion in revenue in 2014 and provided more than 325,000 jobs.

Arizona Gives Day had 100 additional organizations participating this year and has raised more than $4 million in the past four years.

Donors may be able to claim their charitable contributions as a tax deduction.
