Law enforcement says they’re prepared for Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s 4 p.m. rally on Saturday at Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

Organizers are most concerned that the event will take place during the hottest time of day, said Capt. Damon Cecil with the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

“We are encouraging people that are attending the rally to expect long delays,” Cecil said. “Expect high pedestrian and vehicle traffic, and to prepare for those extreme heat situations.”

There were anti-Trump protests when he visited the Valley in March. A handful of people gathered in downtown Phoenix carrying signs and chanting slogans. But other protesters blocked the road to a Trump rally in Fountain Hills. The incident went on for hours, snarled traffic and some were arrested.

Law enforcement has reached out to protest groups in advance of Saturday’s event, Cecil said.

“Most of those groups, not all, but most of those groups, we have talked to their leadership and got assurances that their protests were going to be peaceful and they are not going to have any violence issues,” Cecil said. “We do expect that they will police themselves.”

Gates open to the public at 10:30 a.m. and ticket holders can enter the venue at noon.

The public can access the event via 19th Avenue and Monte Vista Road, as well as on Encanto Boulevard.

Weapons, firearms, signs with sticks, coolers, large purses, computer cases, fanny and other large bags are not allowed inside the coliseum.
