At the end of 2012, Arizona had about 231 doctors for every 100,000 residents -- below the national average of 260 doctors per 100,000 residents.

The combination of two seismic shifts in health care could make that shortage even starker: implementing the Affordable Care Act and changes to how and where veterans get treated.
