When it’s hot and muggy, demand for electricity often rises, and when demand peaks, so does the price. A public workshop scheduled for Thursday morning will look at how to reduce costs.

Peak demand can hit anytime, but it’s most common on weekday afternoons and evenings, from June through August. To meet demand, utilities have to turn on their most expensive plants or buy electricity from other producers.

During Thursday’s public forum at the state capitol, utility regulators and lawmakers will call on a panel of experts to explain what drives peak demand, what customers pay and how to cut costs.  Representatives from utilities, the solar industry and technology companies are scheduled to speak.
