Bill preventing destruction of guns passes Senate
The Arizona Senate on Monday gave preliminary approval to a bill that would ban cities and counties from destroying guns turned in at buybacks.
That approval came after 18 Democratic attempts to amend the bill – all were unsuccessful.
Among the proposed changes were requirements for gun owners to report lost or stolen guns to law enforcement within 24 hours, a ban on large capacity magazines and increased penalties for going into a polling place with a gun and for criminals who have firearms. Democrats argue the underlying bill is counter to normal GOP arguments for local control.
The Senate on Monday approved the bill on a voice vote. It still faces a roll-call vote – if the Senate OK’s the bill then, it’ll go to the governor, since it cleared the state house last month.
