Senate OKs texting spam ban
Arizonans with cell phones take note, unsolicited text messages may soon be a thing of the past. Today the Senate followed the House in passing a ban on marketers sending unsolicited texts to phones.
It’s not hard to find lawmakers against texting spam, those unwanted messages that can flood phones and force users to essentially pay to receive ads. The Senate bill, sponsored by Rep. Eddie Farnsworth, glided through on a 27-0 vote, but this proposal has not been completely free of controversy.
The original bill was amended to allow texts from companies with a business relationship to the phone's owner, after phone companies that use the practice complained, and in a bitter debate last week, the Republican-controlled Senate turned away a Democratic proposal to include a ban on texting while driving. The bill now goes on to Gov. Jan Brewer.
