Less than a week ago, Christine Jones was celebrating what appeared to be a win in the Republican primary contest for Arizona’s 5th Congressional District. But unofficial results now show Arizona Senate President Andy Biggs is leading the race by the slimmest of margins.

After counting thousands of mail-in and provisional ballots, the Maricopa County Recorder’s Office shows Biggs now holds a nine vote lead over Jones. More than 85,000 votes were cast in the four-way primary race that included State Rep. Justin Olson and former Maricopa County Supervisor Don Stapley.

The Biggs campaign issued a statement calling it “one of the most remarkable electoral turnarounds in the history of Arizona politics.”

However, the Christine Jones campaign said in their own statement “the contest ... has entered a new phase and is far from settled” and seemed to cast doubt on the fairness and accuracy of the election.

The secretary of state will certify the election results on Sept. 12. If the nine-vote difference stands, it will likely trigger a recount under Arizona state law.
