Arizona AG Won't Force Secretary Of State To Move Voter Registration Deadline
The Arizona Attorney General's Office will not order Secretary of State Michele Reagan to give voters an extra day to register — that’s despite the fact that the final day lands on a holiday.
The deadline this year is Monday, Oct. 10, which is Columbus Day, a state holiday.
Reagan has told county election officials that does not matter and the deadline still applies.
House Minority Leader Eric Meyer asked the attorney general's office to intercede, citing a state law that says deadlines are moved back if they fall on a holiday.
"She's chosen to potentially reduce voter participation when you would think it would be her job to encourage as many voters to participate in the electoral process as possible, particularly in a presidential election that's coming up," said Meyer.
Secretary of State spokesman Matt Roberts said Meyer is making a big deal out of nothing, saying there's plenty of opportunities to sign up.
"Fourteen of the 15 counties are going to be open for voter registration. We knew that. Service Arizona, where most of our registration information comes from to begin with is, of course, online," said Roberts.
The law requires requests to be postmarked by the Oct. 10 deadline, but the post office will be closed that day.
