Kelly Gneiting, a heavyweight sumo wrestling champion, ran the Shiprock Marathon on Saturday. As we told you last week, Gneiting was training for his third marathon in five years. Apparently, the training paid off.

The Fort Defiance resident crossed the finish line in 12 hours and 10 minutes. It was Gneiting’s slowest marathon to date, but also his most challenging, with a peak elevation of more than 6,000 feet. In a press release, Gneiting thanks the Navajo people who supported him during the 26.2-mile race and says it was the hardest physical thing he’s ever done.

Gneiting made history in 2011 when he set the Guinness World Record for being the heaviest person to complete a marathon. At his most recent weigh in, he was 410 pounds.
