Maricopa County Recorder's Race Still Too Close To Call
Democrat Adrian Fontes has the lead right now in the race for Maricopa County recorder by more than 6,000 votes. But it’s still too close to call as an estimated 350,000 mail-in ballots still need to be counted.
Incumbent Helen Purcell has rarely faced competition in her roughly 30-year tenure as county recorder.
That changed this year. She narrowly defeated challenger Aaron Flannery in the primaries and faced stiff competition in the general election race. As results came in Tuesday night, Purcell said with so many ballots still left to be counted, it's still anyone's race.
"So we will just wait and see what happens. I don’t know what’s gonna happen. As we count the rest of the precincts and also we still have a great number of early ballots to be counted," she said.
Purcell has faced scrutiny in recent months after several missteps, the most notable being a decision to cut the number of polling locations during the heated presidential preference election in March that led to hours-long voting lines.
