While President Obama was meeting with President-elect Trump on Thursday, the Obama administration made an announcement affecting one of Arizona’s largest industries.

The federal government has announced a program to increase solar and wind energy projects.

Through the U.S. Department of the Interior, a new leasing program would encourage development of renewable energy sources on public lands.

The department said the rule's competitive leasing provisions will apply to 700,000 acres of public lands in six western states, including Arizona.
