Election Day has come and gone but many votes are still being counted. This year, the Maricopa County Recorder’s Office received a record number of early ballots: more than 1 million.

Eight hundred thousand of those were tabulated beforehand, but then on Election Day, more than 230,000 additional ballots were dropped off at polling places. The Recorder’s Office can handle about 100,000 ballots a day, and there are more than 238,000 early ballots left to be processed.

There are also 55,000 provisional ballots left to be researched. Recorder’s Office spokeswoman Elizabeth Bartholomew says they have to decide whether or not the ballots will be counted. "They won’t be counted if the voter went to the wrong polling place, if they weren’t registered to vote, if they voted their early ballot,” Bartholomew said.

Bartholomew says they’ll be working all weekend, starting tomorrow at 9 a.m., but she estimates the counting won’t be finished until Thursday or Friday of next week.
