Chandler Puts Forward Amended Sign Ordinance
The city of Chandler has put together proposed revisions to its sign code. The city is amending its sign ordinance because the Supreme Court ruled against the town of Gilbert that it’s unconstitutional for cities to regulate signs based on what the sign says.
David De La Torre is a principal planner with Chandler. He says it’s still necessary to have an ordinance regulating signage.
"If we don’t have regulations, then there could be just too many signs," De La Torre said. "Which would reduce the aesthetic quality of the city and would be too much distraction for people traveling on the roadways.”
De La Torre says the goal of the update is to remove all content-based regulations from the city’s sign code and focus instead on their appearance. For example, instead of regulating open-house signs, the ordinance will regulate A-Frame signs.
“It doesn’t state specifically what the A-Frame sign can say on there. It could be an open house, it could be a yard sale sign, it could be a birthday party sign,” De La Torre said.
The draft revision is available to review on the city’s website. After the public comment period, the city plans to hold public hearings for approval in the first quarter of 2017.
