Hot weather leads to multiple emergency calls in Lake Mead area

June 09, 2013

One man has died and five hikers had to be rescued amid dangerously hot temperatures Saturday.

It all happened in White Rock Canyon, along the Arizona-Nevada border about eight miles from Boulder City. Authorities say a 69-year-old man died, and one man and four Boy Scouts were rescued, after they all suffered from heat-related illnesses.

Lake Mead National Recreation Area park rangers and other agencies received calls for help and went searching as the temperature hit 110 Saturday afternoon.

According to a news release, a Las Vegas man was found about a mile from the trailhead but pronounced dead at the scene. Rescuers were able to help another man until an air ambulance arrived.

The Boy Scouts were reported lost, but stayed in contact by phone until an air crew found them and brought them to the trailhead, where they were treated by paramedics.
