Arpaio files appeal in racial profiling case
Sheriff Joe Arpaio is fighting back against a judge’s ruling that his agency engaged in racial profiling.
The
Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office has long been accused of targeting Latino
drivers. Last month, U.S. District Judge Murray Snow ruled Sheriff Arpaio’s officers
singled out Latinos in immigration patrols, and that deputies held Latinos who
were pulled over for unreasonable lengths of time. The decision came more than
eight months after a week-long bench trial in
Friday, Arpaio’s lawyers filed a notice of appeal with the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. They list seven specific issues in Snow’s May 24 ruling the Sheriff’s Office takes issue with.
The plaintiffs who faced off against Arpaio want a court-appointed monitor to make sure the MCSO follows Snow’s order to stop profiling Latinos, a move the Sheriff has strongly resisted.
