Mexico is critical of U.S. immigration bill
The Mexican government is publicly expressing disappointment with the immigration bill making its way through the U.S. Senate.Mexico says the proposal’s heavy focus on border security is not consistent with the relationship between it and the U.S.
Foreign Relations Secretary Jose Meade said that instead of expanding a border fence as proposed in the bill, the U.S. should modernize border bridges to expedite commerce. According to Meade, measures that could affect ties between communities move away from the principles of shared responsibility and neighborliness.He says that "fences are not the solution" to the problem of illegal immigration. Meade’s statement marked the first time the Mexican government has addressed the U.S. immigration bill.
