Excessive heat sparks people to take precaution

The sun is going to make people miserable this weekend, and forecasters are expecting temperatures to approach 120 degrees. Heat like this can be deadly. Some people tell us what they are doing to stay safe.

Construction workers are among the most vulnerable people in this kind of weather. A crew working near the ASU Polytechnic campus arrived at Power Road at 5:00 a.m. The team is building a new road that spans a canal.

“As soon as we get good daylight, that’s when we start so that we can get out of these situations as quickly as possible,” said construction superintendent Sam Miller. He said the crew will stop working by 1:00 p.m. “We make sure that all the water cans are accessible, very close to our crews and you watch, everybody watches out for everybody else,” he added.

Across town in Tempe, the Basha High School junior varsity baseball team warmed up before a game. Parents were sitting under a tree near the third base line. Cedric McCray said he worries about his son in the heat.

“I keep a close eye on it, and if I see that’s someone is overheating then you recognize it pretty quick and you know, take action.”

Mom Dawn Schneider said she is a little less concerned, because as locals, she added laughing, we should ,“Sock it up. We’re use to it.”
