Officials discover 160-feet long drug-smuggling tunnel

June 28, 2013

Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers say they've shut down an incomplete drug-smuggling tunnel under the border at Nogales. Spokeswoman Amber Cargile says the finding came during a routine inspection of the main storm drain system on both sides of the border.

“Our investigators believe that the tunnel was pretty close but not quite ready to be completed and that ultimately, it would have broken through a public parking lot located down near the Deconcini port of entry,” Cargile said.

Cargile says the tunnel was 160 feet long, two feet wide and three feet tall and that numerous tools were found inside.  It was the 6th cross-border tunnel found in Nogales since the start of the federal fiscal year, in October.
