Tempe awarded Habitat for Humanity Central Arizona almost $830,000 to construct affordable housing in the city.

The organization has plans for a three-story complex with homes for 18 families.

“Habitat services families that wouldn't normally qualify for a traditional loan,” said Dusty Parsons, Habitat for Humanity Central Arizona’s director of marketing and communications. “We can partner with them to build affordable housing when we have partnerships like we do with the city of Tempe.”

Volunteers and builders will break ground on the home site on Don Carlos Avenue on Saturday at 9 a.m.

Parsons said after putting up the first wall, everyone stops for a dedication ceremony and to write their prayers and blessings for the family on the first boards of the new house.
