A new report said technology is making personal electronics smaller and lighter, and Tempe-based Amkor Technology Inc. is one of the companies leading the change.

Amkor Technology Inc. assembles and tests semiconductors.

To do it, Amkor, and other companies like them, use a technology called SiP, or System in Package. The technology allows manufacturers to integrate electronic circuits into a single unit - into places like cell phones or cars.

A recent industry research report projects the global SiP market to reach $30 billion in annual revenue within five years. It said the need for higher speeds and smaller sizes of electronic products have fueled technology advances.

The report also said Amkor is considered one of the world’s top ten players in the industry. Major competitors include Qualcomm and Toshiba.
