More than 30,000 children in Arizona receive state-subsidized care each month. The Child Care Services Division of the Arizona Department of Economic Security is responsible for issuing subsidies to eligible families for child care as well as approving and monitoring child-care providers.

A report from the Auditor General's Office released Wednesday says that the department is not conducting enough annual site visits in accordance with state guidelines.

The findings also show inconsistencies among inspectors and their methods when they do inspect a site.

Dot Reinhard manages the performance audit division at the Office of the Auditor General. She says the complaint process for child-care providers needs to be updated as well.

“There’s a new federal requirement that goes into place later this year that will require them to have complaint information readily available,” Reinhard said.

That information is typically found on a website. But there’s no such information currently available online.

The report found the department also lacks a method for tracking complaints to see if problems with child-care providers were ever resolved.
