Elevators at Phoenix City Hall will get a major makeover nearly a year after the mayor got stuck in one. The project is expected to cost up to $6 million.

Twenty three years after being installed, eleven passenger elevators have reached the end of their useful life, according to a consultant’s report. It says the elevator equipment needs to be replaced or the city could face more frequent breakdowns and people getting trapped.

Slow, loud elevator rides are not unusual for people working and visiting the 20-story building downtown. In March, 2016, Mayor Greg Stanton and his security detail were trapped for almost 30 minutes before a technician got them out.

Last week, council members approved a phased approach. Once a contract is awarded, the goal is for the work to be done by the end of 2019.
