The sheriff is asking for $98 million, a slight increase from last year, but Penzone admits he’ll probably need more.

In a memo to the Office of Management and Budget, the sheriff said his office is facing significant budgetary challenges.

He cites ongoing legal orders related to civil-rights litigation against the Sheriff’s Office as draining millions of dollars from the budget.

MSCO is relying heavily on overtime to staff patrol and detention officer positions. The sheriff said he expects to be 40 percent over the requested budget for overtime by the end of the year.

The sheriff’s request is within the levels set by the OMB, but he is requesting those levels be re-examined.

The Office of Management and Budget will now review the request and make a recommendation to the Board of Supervisors.
