You may know the Colorado River supplies 41 percent of the total water to Arizona. That means a turn of your tap or the swoosh of your sprinklers, and you’re looking to Lake Mead, the nation’s largest reservoir off the Colorado River, as your source.

The Gila River Indian Community has the largest entitlement to central Arizona water and that means they have some flexibility in how they can use that water — or save it for the future, according to Tom Buschatzke, director of the Arizona Department of Water Resources.

A new agreement signed on Wednesday by the Gila River Indian Community, the state of Arizona, the city of Phoenix, and the Walton Family Foundation expands tribal participation in Lake Mead conservation programs.
