Tanque Verde Falls Cliff Jumper Dies

July 30, 2013

A man who died after striking his head as he jumped off a cliff near Tanque Verde Falls near Tucson has been identified as 29-year-old Richard Baker. Witnesses said the man never surfaced after the jump and was pulled from the water by his friends. Tracy Suitt of the Pima County Sheriff's Office said cliff jumping is risky.

“When you’re up there on the rocks and there is water running, it gets very slippery up there,” Suitt said. “What happens is people tend to slip, and they injure themselves.”

And, Suitt said you never know the water depth or whether there are other hazards to consider. Baker died after a jump on Sunday.
