Havasupai Reservation To Receive Emergency Water After Monsoon Showers

July 30, 2013

Recent monsoon rain showers have cut off the water supply on the Havasupai reservation. In response, St. Mary’s Food Bank will start shipping water to the Grand Canyon Wednesday morning. St. Mary’s said it is sending 30,000 bottles of water to the Havasupai Nation because torrential rain and flooding have damaged the area’s electrical supply. Water pumps are run by electric generators, and a St. Mary’s news release said it could take up to five days to test the safety of the water once power is restored.

The food bank will truck the emergency supply of drinking water to Fredonia. From there, it will be airlifted by helicopter to the 500 people who are residents of the Havasupai Nation.
