Three Companies Vying To Dig Into Phoenix Trash
Three companies are hoping to dig into Phoenix’s trash. Their proposals could increase recycling efforts while saving tax dollars.
Every gallon of latex paint that Phoenix collects is shipped to a recycling center in California. It currently costs the city $5 per gallon. Colorado-based Green Sheen Paint & Design wants to charge $3.50 per gallon to recycle the paint at its plant in Phoenix. The proposal would cost the city a maximum of $56,000 per year, or $168,000 over the life of the three-year contract, which also includes two one-year renewal options.
GIS Consulting wants to collect approximately 100 tons of carpeting and carpet foam that is sent to the landfill every year at no cost to the company or the city. It would be made into blown insulation and concrete products at its Phoenix facility. The pilot program would be for six months with four one-year renewal options.
Gilbert-based Edgewood Lumber and Sawmill hopes to process some of the 130 tons of tree trunks and stumps at no cost. According to a city report, the company would make a portion of the wood available to Phoenix high-school wood-shop classes. The contract would be for three years with two one-year renewal terms.
On Tuesday, the Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee recommended that the full City Council approve the contracts. The city of Phoenix has set a goal of diverting 40 percent of trash from the landfill by 2020 and has launched the Innovation Resource Campus at the 27th Avenue Transfer Station.
