The future of Hance Park in downtown Phoenix could include a lot of corporate buy-in, thanks to a new policy created by the Parks and Recreation Board.

While there are no plans to sell the naming rights to Margaret T. Hance Park, named after Phoenix’s only elected female mayor, companies could buy the rights to certain areas.

“If somebody gave us a large amount of money and said for consideration for the next ten years I would like to give x amount of money to put my name on the amphitheater that might be something we would consider,” said Inger Erikson, parks and recreation director.

The Parks Board policy states, in general, businesses involved with alcohol, tobacco, firearms or pornography would not be eligible for sponsorships. Design and construction of the Hance Park Master Plan is estimated at $135 million. It’s expected to be completed in phases using a mix of public and private money.

The 32-acre park is located over the Interstate 10 freeway tunnel between Fifth Avenue and Third Street. It was built to help mitigate the impact of building a freeway through downtown neighborhoods.
