Daphne’s Headcovers exports animal design golf-club covers to dozens of countries.

A Phoenix business that makes golf-club covers is sharing the spotlight with the world’s largest missile maker. They are among four companies being honored in the Sun Corridor Export Recognition Program.

At the age of 16, Jane Spicer started selling golf-club covers to earn enough money to buy a car. And she hasn’t stopped. Her company, Daphne’s Headcovers, exports animal design covers to dozens of countries. 

To be successful, Amy St. Peter with the Maricopa Association of Governments said, the business needs to be aware of cultural differences. 

“When she enters a new market, a new country, there’s different animals there,” she explained. “So she needs help to identify what animals are present in that country and what animals really resonate with that market.” 

St. Peter shared details of the Sun Corridor Export Recognition Program during Tuesday’s meeting of MAG’s Economic Development Committee.

“What’s important about exporting is that diversity,” she said. “It’s the large businesses, it’s the small businesses. Ninety five percent of the businesses in the city of Phoenix for example that are exporting have fewer than 50 employees.”

Later this month, Daphne’s Headcovers will be honored as a top exporter in the Sun Corridor which covers Maricopa, Pima and Pinal counties. Missile maker Raytheon, Able Aerospace and Abbott Nutrition will also be recognized. 

A four-hour event scheduled for Friday, May 19, will recognize the top exporters and feature various speakers who will address how to join forces and grow the economy in the Sun Corridor.
