Tempe's Big Surf Recognized As A Historic Landmark

Surfing in the desert is not an easy thing to do. There is a lot of sand but not much water. That is what has made Big Surf in Tempe such a big deal since it opened in 1969, and now Big Surf’s Waikiki Beach Wave Pool has been designated a historic landmark by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Attorney and scholar Grady Gammage grew up in Tempe when his dad was president of Arizona State University.
