Tucson Electric Looking To Diversify Power Sources
Tucson Electric Power says it is diversifying its energy portfolio, which will mean generating more power from renewable sources.
The company says it is attempting to take advantage of low natural gas prices by entering into talks with Entegra Power Group to buy its gas-fired generating unit at the Gila River Generating Station in Gila Bend.
Meanwhile, Tucson Electric Power says less of its power will be generated at the coal-fired Springerville Generating Station in eastern Arizona.
Last year, TEP says more than 5 percent of its total retail sales were generated by renewable resources.
The decisions are part of a long-term TEP strategy, which also includes the potential retirement of coal-fired resources at the San Juan Generating Station near Farmington, New Mexico.
Tucson Electric provides service to about 408,000 customers in southern Arizona.
