A growing number of Americans in the gig economy are stepping away from the corporate ladder and climbing one of their own, yet adequate insurance coverage may not be top of mind.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, 29 million people are self-employed nationwide, with that number increasing by half-a-million every year.

Katie Vlietstra with the National Association for the Self-Employed said that often securing life insurance and disability coverage is lost in the shuffle of entrepreneurship.

"As you get started you have assets that need to be protected. Just make sure that you have the proper level of legal protection. If that's insurance, you need to figure out how do you secure benefits for you and especially if you have a family" she said.

Vlietstra says it is better to spend money on a lawyer upfront, than to find out that all bases were not covered later in the midst of disaster.
