The Navajo Nation Police Department has gone without an academy for over five years.

The previous training center in Toyei closed due to maintenance and operational issues in 2013. Recruits received training and certifications at academies across the state.

Police Chief Phillip Francisco told the Navajo Times there are currently 13 officers at the new facility in Chinle, and he expects about five additional officers in the coming weeks.

Although the Chinle center is temporary, Francisco said there are plans for a permeant facility and the Navajo Nation Police Department is partnering with a federal training center in New Mexico.

The Navajo Nation Police Department did not make anyone available for comment.
