Phoenix has 778 miles of roads and paths designed for bicycles. Now it’s looking to plan the next five years of development.

The five-year bicycle program is one of several documents including the General Plan and the Comprehensive Bicycle Master Plan that helps Phoenix plan its transportation future.

For example, it outlines big goals such as 1,080 new miles of bike lanes and specifically where those projects might go.

“We are trying to make better use of our existing streets,” said Street Transportation Deputy Director Mark Melnychenko. “How can we evaluate the street and possibly have the ability to put in other modes of transportation?”

Melnychenko said Phoenix has, for the most part, maxed out its ability to widen streets.

Residents can share their opinions and needs online through the end of March.

Melnychenko said it’s also an opportunity to for the public to help the city answer some important questions like, “Are we placing and considering bicycle infrastructure in the correct locations?”

The results of citizens surveys will be presented to the Citizen Transportation Committee and other city agencies.
