The first gray wolf on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon since the 1940s may have been spotted. Federal officials are trying to confirm the sighting.

The animal was first spotted Oct. 4 a wearing what appears to be an inactive radio-tracking collar. It has been seen several times since then. A visitor to the Grand Canyon managed to take photos of the wolf. The Center for Biological Diversity reports the wolf likely traveled down from the northern Rocky Mountains.  

The center says the gray wolf disappeared from the north rim of the Canyon after government hunters killed 30 of the animals in the early 1900s

The gray wolf is protected under the Endangered Species Act, which prohibits killing, wounding or harassing the animal and provides other protections.
