Sen. John McCain.

Sen. John McCain was admitted to Mayo Clinic in Phoenix where he underwent surgery on Sunday.

McCain suffered an intestinal infection that required surgery, according to his congressional office.

The infection was caused by diverticulitis, a common gastrointestinal disease that develops from small pouches called diverticula that form along the digestive tract, most commonly in the large intestine. When these pouches become inflamed, abdominal pain, bloating, cramping and constipation can occur. In more serious cases, an infection can result that requires surgery to remove the damaged section of intestine.

Over the last several months, McCain has been undergoing physical therapy at his home in Cornville, Arizona, after being treated for glioblastoma, a lethal form of brain cancer.
