The U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments on Tuesday that could potentially change the way states collect taxes on internet retailers with no brick-and-mortar presence on the ground, and the outcome could potentially mean big returns for state coffers.

The case, South Dakota v. Wayfair Inc., asked the court to turn over a previous case known as Quill Corp vs North Dakota.
